These objects came out of a need to bottle up, encapsulate and be done with the anxiety of the year. They are at the same time symptoms and small doses of a cure for the sense of inescapability and suspense which 2020 brought with it. The microcosmos of the small, intimate and practical objects that make up our personal space and daily routines seem to have become the only landscape available. I felt that leaving the objects white would help them become a sort of universal signified, rather than simply documentary. I don’t know if I succeeded.
The exhibition itself was a collaborative project between my grandmother, mother and me. Put together our works created a fictitious gendered space of motherhood and intimacy, which included private letters, garments, objects and furniture used by women through different historical circumstances. It is funny how these types of surroundings, the boudoirs and dressing rooms, which were once the only spaces available to women, now became a reality for all of us. Has the public sphere become immaterial, or have our private spaces been uprooted as we all shift towards virtual encounters?
